2012 UN Women USNC Walk to End Violence Against Women & Girls
Hugh MacRae Park
South College Road and Lake Avenue
UN Women/USNC NC Chapter
The U.S. National Committee for Women is one of 18 national committees that support the mission of UN Women. UN Women was established by the General Assembly in July 2010 with the merger of 4 former UN agencies and offices: the UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), the Division for Advancement of Women (DAW) , the Office of the Special Advisor on Gender Issues, and the US International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (UN - INSTRAW).
The U.S. National Committee and its Chapters:
- Support UN Women projects that promote women’s economic empowerment, leadership and the elimination of gender-based violence
- Promote events and campaigns that educate our members and the general public about human rights issues affecting women worldwide
- Raise funds for UN Women through private contributions and public events
- Inform elected officials about women’s issues and engage their support for UN Women programs
Our Chapters are volunteer committees of the organization that work in their communities to raise awareness about UN Women, increase membership, host events and raise funds for the National Committee in support of UN Women projects.
Annual Walks to End Violence Against Women and Girls
Each year, the U.S. National Committee hosts a series of walks around the country to support initiatives to end violence against women. The U.S. National Committee Chapters organize walks in their area to take a stand against violence and educate their communities on the issue.
